Michael Campbell, TFP Vice President of Sales in the United States will be presenting alongside Forward Engineering North America Managing Director, Adam Halsband at the upcoming SPE-Automotive Composites Conference & Exhibition in Novi, MI USA Thursday 7th September 2023 1.00 - 1.30pm (EDT). Exhibition dates: 6-8 September 2023.

The shift to electrified powertrains and autonomous vehicles is driving an increase in demand for flexible, scalable cost-effective structural components. This trend combined with advancements in polymer composite technologies is creating more opportunities for the inclusion of composite structures. However, an unintended consequence of replacing metal components with fiber reinforced polymer (FRP) composite parts is that these alternative parts typically lack intrinsic electromagnetic interference (EMI) shielding which is otherwise taken for granted with metallic components.

In the presentation titled ‘The Development and Validation of an EMI Enhanced SMC Compound for BEV Applications’ Michael and Adam will share the status of the development of an EMI Enhanced SMC Compound, results of molding and forming trials, the development of a capable Test Method for Evaluating EMI Shielding Effectiveness of formed SMC Panels, and the results of a comprehensive series of EMI Performance Test Trials conducted on an EMI Enhanced SMC Compound, and currently accepted solutions.

TFP’s Performance Nonwovens for the Automotive Industry

TFP’s lightweight nonwovens are used extensively in the automotive industry, providing established solutions for a high-quality surface finish and the corrosion protection of composite body work. The latest application for our materials is in composite EV battery boxes where they provide solutions for both EMI shielding and fire protection - key challenges in the move from metal to lighter weight composites.
