This year at JEC World, we will be exhibiting our advanced nonwovens at stand P32 H5. On display will be materials from the Optiveil®, Optimat® and Tecnofire® ranges, designed specifically to provide solutions for complex composite challenges
Our multi-functional Optiveil® and Optimat® materials are designed to overcome several composite challenges using a single material. Their highly porous structure allows enhanced resin uptake and transportation, aiding fabrication and lowering resin usage. While the consistent, even fibre distribution of the veil results in a high quality and resin rich surface finish, reducing the occurrence of print through and processing. Our lightweight veils come in a variety of fibre types to confer added functionality. Typical examples include:
- Metal coated carbon fibres to provide EMI shielding for battery and electronics enclosures and conductivity for resistive heating applications.
- Aramid fibres to improve surface abrasion resistance for friction substrates in automotive, sporting goods and roll covers.
- Glass and carbon fibres to add a corrosion resistant surface for industrial applications and manage static dissipation.
- Dielectric veils to provide electrically isolating layers between dissimilar conductive materials, which prevent pitting and potential structural failure that can be induced by the electrochemical reaction that causes galvanic corrosion.
In addition to surfacing applications our veils can also improve the longevity of composites; interleaving our thermoplastic veils between reinforcement layers can improve the mode-I and mode-II interlaminar fracture toughness of structures by up to 400%!
Also displayed on our stand will be Tecnofire®, our range of lightweight intumescent fire protection materials. These materials allow composites to pass the rigorous reaction to fire and fire resistance test standards and have been used extensively in infrastructure, construction, mass transport and aerospace applications. Using traditional fabrication methods Tecnofire® can be incorporated directly into composite structures, protecting them from fire, whilst reducing smoke and heat release. They can also be combined with FR resins and integrate well into FR laminate composite assemblies. Tecnofire® provides built in composite fire protection without compromising on the integrity of the structure and has been used to pass key reaction to fire standards including ASTM E662, E162 and the EN45545-2 rail sector standard.
